New Project - Punchneedle Rug From the Kit

To have a little bit of brake from petite pointing, last weekend I decided to start a punchneedle rug from the kit that has been in my stash.

The most important thing is to find a special Punchneedle fabric and stretch it on the frame. I used very fine Russian Punch needle that is also called "Igolochka" (Иголочка).

This is the picture of the kit I have

Here is a picture of a rug from my collection that has been done with French knots. The design and colors are beautiful but the thickness of this rug is out of 1/12th scale.

I've been asking myself if there is any other types of needlework to make a rug as close to the scale as possible?

The reason why I keep experimenting with the Punchneedle is that the process of working on it is very, I mean it, very fast, there is no any comparison with the petite pointing, and I like that look, but... in spite of the fact that the punchneedle rugs look beautiful and give absolutely different touch to the miniature scene, I consider this type of rugs to be out of scale... Unless if I am doing something wrong...

Anyway, I will finish this Punchneedle rug, and I am sure later, some day, I will make another one, but for now I will devote my time to petite pointing.

So, what is important in miniature world in your opinion: to be close to the scale or just to have illusion of it?

Have a great day,

Natalia

  1. Dear Natalia,
I like; to be close to the scale.

  3. Hi, Natalia! Looks lovely so far! :D I've printed rugs on paper what look in scale in photos of the room but look silly in person. I've had rugs that look great in person and just right in scale in a room, too. I think it depends on your furnishings and how you decorate. If the rug is very out of scale, it will show, but as long as it is close, I think it will enhance a room. :]

  5. Another project just to have a little break... ;O) Looks lovely so far. I think scale should ususally be the goal, but in real life we sometimes have some brought-together-items so why should everything fit perfectly together in miniature world? When delicate patterns are needed punching won't bring you the best results, but when you need a colourful rug with blocks of colour for a modern house this might be perfect. So I hope you're not giving up experimenting.

    Greetings

  9. I love what you are doing. It looks very beautiful already and to me it seems even more difficult than the
embroidered rugs. I'm sure it will look gorgeous in a room.

  11. Natalia, about 30 years ago, I saw a Russian punch needle rug in San Francisco. That is probably exactly what you are looking for. It was done with the finest of needles, with one strand if silk. Then the maker somehow clipped the threads on top to form a cut pile. Unfortunately the maker is no longer living and as far as I know, she took the secret to the grave. I have never seen anything like it anywhere else. It was truly amazing! Maybe you could do some experimenting?

  12. Hello Natalie! what a pretty rug! yes it can be very difficult to punch to scale. I have done a few hundred of them but only one kit as they do seem off scale. so I design all mine. if you get the stitches nice and close and the pile the right height they are wonderful! Either way I am sure a great diversion from the beautiful detail work you are used to doing. Little Smoochies Katie Arthur.

  14. Casey, thank you! You gave me a hope and motivation. I won't stop experimenting. I shaved my first punchneedle rug and actually liked the result, but then finishing the backside killed my enthusiasm, :(((.
