Dollhouse Miniature Petit Point Area Rug KAZAK 1/12th scale

Dollhouse Miniature Needlepoint Rug KAZAK 1/12th scale - reproduction of an antique Kazak rug.

Caucasian rugs are the product of the various tribes inhabiting the wild and mountainous district between the Black and Caspian seas.

Most Caucasian carpets use bold, almost primitive, geometric forms, most are bright and colorful, most are small. Many motifs, however, were taken from Persia and Turkey to be rendered in the virale, linear style of the Caucasus.

One of the best-known and popular Caucasian rugs is KAZAK. The geometric pattern of Kazak rugs is bold, often showing more empty ground than other Caucasian carpets. The colors are also bold: red, green, blue, white, brown.

Where does the name KAZAK come from?

First of all, please, do not be confused. Kazak rugs are not woven by Cossacks of Russia or Kazakhs of Kazakhstan. Kazak in it's many spellings refers to a political relationship rather than a tribe. The first use of the term is in the Yuan ch'ao pi-shih which dates to the 13th century. The Kazaks of Kazak were Azeri tribes that tried to maintain their freedom while standing off the Turks, the Persians, and the Russians. When Czar Alexander annexed Kazak, Shams od din, and Borchalu in 1805 the Moslems and Kurds were uprooted. So, When we read Kazak Rug in the rug trade we mean a rug made in what was the Kazak Khanate prior to the Russian capture in 1805.

The dollhouse needlepoint Kazak rug is stitched on 49 count silk gauze with Gloriana silk

Dollhouse Miniature Petit Point KAZAK Rug - Work in Progress

Here is my new update on a Dollhouse Miniature Petit Point Kazak rug in 1/12th scale. Little reminder: 49 count silk gauze, Gloriana silk floss.

Somebody might not like me bringing too much of red color in the field of the rug. First, I yelled at myself too, but then I started liking it more, probably adjusted. Frankly speaking, the red color I used for the border was over and, since our the only one local needlework store in the city was closed last summer, I was forced to buy silk floss on-line. I ordered the same number, the same name. However, it arrived brighter than I used to have.

I planned to finish this rug last month. Hopefully, I will have more time to finish it in November, or let's say this year. I have already stitched 2014 on the rug - the year it has to be finished.

Happy day!

Just a little reminder: 49 count silk gauze, Gloriana silk floss, 6,5" x 8,5".

Have a great week!

Dollhouse Miniature Petit Point Kazak Rug in 1/12th scale - Update

When an idea of stitching a miniature Kazak rug popped up in my head, the main goal was to concentrate on the border and make it as detailed as possible, and leave the center of the rug plain, actually, fill it up with an over dyed silk floss imitating an abrash that you can see in antique rugs. When I finished working on the border of the Kazak rug and reached the point of moving onto the center, a reasonable question raised in my head: Do I really want to spend/waste time monotonously filling up the field of the rug that measures almost 4" x 6"? No. NO! So, I came up with the design for the middle of the rug and started working on it. Here is a picture of stitching progress:

After a couple of days of working on it I realized I was running out of 2 colors. Our only one local needlework store was closed last year (it hurts me a lot), so I used E-bay to purchase Gloriana silk floss to finish my rug. While I am waiting for the silk floss to arrive, I decided to work on another project, but later about it...

Happy 1st of October!

Dollhouse Miniature Reproduction of an Antique Kazak Rug in 1/12th scale - Update

Today I want to show you the updates on 2 rugs that I am currently working on.

The first is a dollhouse miniature Kazak rug in 1/12th scale, 49 count. I finally finished last inner border. There are total of 8 borders in this rug.

When I started charting Kazak rug I planned to make the rug that it would be all about the borders: bright colors and simplicity in geometric design, this is what impresses me in Kazak rugs. I wanted to finish the field of the rug with 1 over dyed color, for instance, light green. However, now, I am thinking about to come up with design for the field, because it seems to be waist of time just to sit and monotonously fill the are up. What do you think?

Second rug the update on which I wanted to show is French Savonnerie. The medallion is in the process.

Now, back to work!

I hope, everyone has had a wonderful weekend and ready for a new week! Good luck!

Dollhouse Miniature Antique Petit Point Kazak Rug in 1/12th scale - Work In Progress

It has been for a long time I worked on my Dollhouse Miniature Antique rug Kazak in 1/12th scale.

Just want to remind that I am stitching it on 49 count silk gauze with Gloriana over dyed silk. The finished rug will measure approx. 6.5" x 8.5".

I am almost done with the main border. Almost... As you can see, I outlined the design in the outter border with black colr and now will "color" it.

and this is how the rug looked last time

Can't wait to start working on the center of the rug, though the design is not ready yet...

Dollhouse Miniature Kazak Rug - Work in Progress

Little update on my stitching Dollhouse Miniature KAZAK Area Rug in 1/12th scale. I am almost done with the main border and at the same time trying to work on the bottom of the rug. Don't forget it is 49 count silk gauze and the process of stitching is slowing down: I want my stitches to lay down smoothly and even, no knots, no tails behind, :)))))

Dollhouse Miniature Kazak rug - Work in progress

While the dollhouse miniature Heriz Serapi rug is hanging on the blocking board I picked up another project that has to be finished as fast as possible - dollhouse miniature Kazak rug in 1/12th scale. Last time you saw this rug was last February and it looked like this:

Just want to remind that I am stitching it on 49 count silk gauze with Gloriana over dyed silk. The finished rug will measure approx. 6.5" x 8.5".

My goal is to finish the main border this week and start working on the inner border. I hope to accomplish this task. It is very, I mean, very hot here and I don't have any desire to spend any time outside, the heat makes me disabled.

Are you staying cool?

Dollhouse Miniature Kazak rug - Work in progress

I haven't finished the horns yet and couldn't help myself but started "coloring" the background of the main border.

On the picture it looks like Ecru color, but I am using color that is called Green Tea and unfortunetly I couldn't depict the real color of this floss using my camera.

More than that the gadget that uploads the images changed the properties somehow and I can't control the position of the images and put them in the middle of the post as I used to do before and it irritates the heck out of me, (:::

I am still working on the borders of the Dollhouse Miniature Kazak rug in 1/12th scale.

I finished the little border in the middle of the rug and now am "coloring" the horns in the main border.

A little reminder: I use 49 count silk gauze with Gloriana over dyed silk floss.

Antique Kazak Rug in 1/12th scale - Week 10

The work on Antique Kazak rug in 1/12th scale is progressing.

As you can see, I worked in "coloring" the horns and finished outlining the inner border

I decided to upload a couple of pictures of the process made last week for you to see the difference in the progress. You probably think - not significant. I must admit it is a time consuming process, especially when you have a lack of time. I use 12"-14" thread for stitching. It takes me this amount of thread and 15-20 minutes (believe it or not!) to "color" each horn. Now let's do some math, to finish filling up 10 horns will take approx. 5 hours per a day. Unfortunately, I don't have that kind of luxury. Last Sunday I finished 11 horns and it took me 4 hours and 25 minutes total:

After that, on Monday and Tuesday I worked on the inner borders:

and finally on the 10/10/12 I was ready to finish that outlining:

See you next Sunday!

Antique Kazak Rug in 1/12th scale - Week 9

I can't believe another week has passed by...

I had time to stitch only today and am sure that if I stitch that amount of time that I devoted today, I would have finished the borders months ago. For now it is what it is.

As you can see I started "color" the horns in the main border.

I would like to stress the importance of symbolism in Kazak carpets. In carpet design, symbols can be broken down into those hoped to bestow good fortunes onto a household and those intended to protect it from bad ones. The ram's horn motif (that I use in this design) is by far the most popular Kazak motif (khoshkhar muiz) in all its variations - single, double, cross-shaped or broken and considered life bringing symbol of prosperity. The ram’s horn symbolizes manhood, male fertility, strength and bravery.

Next week I will tell you more about the Kazak rugs.

Have a creative Sunday!

Antique Kazak Rug in 1/12th scale - Week 8

I was able to work on my rug only last 3 days and didn't progress to much, but at least almost finished with the right side of the outer border and started to form the third layer of borders of the rug in the middle.

Just a reminder: I am using 49 count silk gauze and Gloriana overdyed silk.

I would love to finish this rug at the end of October. Ha-ha-ha - Napoleon's plans!

have a great week,

Antique Kazak rug in 1/12th scale - Week 6

Today is a day I show the progress of stitching the dollhouse miniature rug - a reproduction of an antique Kazak rug in 1/12th scale.

I worked on the outer border - filled up the background with beautiful Northern Lights color by Gloriana silk on the sides and I started developing the inner border as you can see on the image.

As for the Green Aubusson, there won't be any update today. The reason is that last week we had some business in Montana and I left a bag with all floss for that rug at the hotel. So, I need to go and buy new threads and then will continue working on it.

I wish you all had a great weekend and ready for a new week!

Antique Kazak rug in 1/12th scale - Week 5

This is some progress on stitching a dollhouse miniature rug - a reproduction of an antique Kazak rug, 18 century in 1/12th scale. The frame is not finished yet as I anticipated, at least I haven't lost an interest at working on it yet, lol...

More news this coming week,

Antique Kazak Rug - Week 4 and Crazy Quilt

I am working on the borders right now and want to finish them before to jump on the other element of the rug.

Yesterday I showed you my first block in Crazy quilt. Today in the morning I added a couple of more details to it and now it has this look. I like the colors a lot but was not really satisfied with the lines and way I pieced it. The block measures 12" square.

So I decided to make fast another block and picked up the colors I didn't care about. My main goal was to concentrate on the principle of piecing around a 5-sides block. Do you see the difference? I don't like the color combination in this block but pretty much satisfied with the way it has been pieced. This block measures 7" square.

Sop, now I have 2 block to work with and we will see how it will work out.

And last but not least, if you interested in the Historic Clothing, The Colonial Wiliamsburg has on-line exhibition that you don't want to miss. Even if you are not interested in the Historic Clothing, I think it is worth to look at it anyway and explore antique clothing and accessories from 1600-1860 in this new online exhibit..
